Every fisher-person needs a tackle box. And most of the fisher-people going to John Martin Reservoir have their own. But certainly…not loaded with all the goodies they might find at The Tackle Box, at 104 Garden Street, Hasty, Colorado. Located about a quarter mile south of Rte 50 on the road to John Martin Dam, look for their signs on the left side of the road. Now, Hasty-ites and tourists alike have additional access to all manner of bait, lures, jigs, weights, etc.
Lori and Joe Marrinan opened their bait shop on May 27, 2016. “We wanted to be open for Memorial Day” Lori told me.
“We’ve fished all our lives” she said. “And we wanted to do something enjoyable with our retirement; we wanted to do something in Hasty.”
But The Tackle Box name can be a little misleading.
-Yes – they have numerous types of bait including minnows, live fish, liver, etc.
-Yes – several types of worms fill their worm bins (some that appear more dinosaur-like to me than the wigglies in my garden!)
-Yes – they carry rows of jigs – homemade by Joe (they look amazing)
-Yes – life-jackets are available for boaters
-And yes – numerous manner of fishing lures and weights (also home-made by Joe) fill their pegboard.
But fishing stuff is not the only fare at The Tackle Box. Lori and Joe are quite the crafters. Some of their lovely, homemade items are also available;
-Professionally sculpted cutting-boards by Lori, with some exotic woods (a lovely purple wood makes up the middle of the pig-shaped board) decorate the wall near the register.
-A wooden rack-pulling item that will save your hands – and your cake, when your potholders have vanished, yet again.
-Pine-cone fire starters. Painted with her secret fire – starting coating, they come in pretty pastel shades. She assured me that when you place one of these lovelies under the wood in your fire pit or the charcoal in your grill, your fire will start quicker than you can throw on the burgers or marshmallows. And, they are under $1.
-A homemade hand-cream and cutting board rub that includes coconut, lemon and mineral oils. (It is lovely to use and smells super!).
They also have plans for RV/boat storage on their large property, as well as a delivery service to the Hasty Lake Campground (paperwork already in process with the powers-that be).
“We will be willing to stock snake and other reptile food if we see a need” Lori mentioned. So let them know if your pet Boa needs more items on her menu.
Looking for that special little extra item to top off your own tackle box? Check out their goody box; it just may have the key item to catch your next 42 pound cat fish from the Stilling Basin at John Martin.
And speaking of that 66 pound fish…The Tackle Box sports a BRAGGIN BOARD; bring in that award-winning shot of you actually holding that 89 pound cat fish; this will – once and for all – prove to the world that you really did catch that 98 pounder! (Ask Joe if he can fashion a special jig for those larger fish…)
When Lori chatted a bit about her family, her eyes warmed as she shared. “Joe and I have been married 26 years; we’re still on our honeymoon.” Pride embraced her words as she described their ‘3 successful and beautiful daughters’.
If all your fishing has your tummy growling, you are in luck. The store features a special coffee-maker that brews individual cups of coffee, tea and hot chocolate. (And yes – they are going to stock decaf!). There are snacks there as well. And ice. And fire wood for your not-to-be-forgotten bon fire by the water.
The Tackle Box is open 7 days a week at present though Lori mentioned maybe taking Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. “We have to come into the store every day to clean the fish tanks; if someone has a need, they can call us and we can coordinate a time to be here.”
Current hours are basically 8AM to 5PM (M-Thur); 6:30AM to 7:30PM (Fri, Sat); 8AM to noon (Sun). But customer service rules at The Tackle Box; they closed after 8PM last nite (Thurs) because…the customers were there.
