Don and Jennifer Ebright re-opened Valley Grocery on Saturday, May 21st, 2016. “We wanted to be open for Memorial Day” Jennifer said with her award-winning smile, “and we made our goal!”
As we chatted and I looked around the store, it beamed with bright light, sparkled with cleanliness and showed off ample room between the showcases and wall refrigerators. Modern neon signs advertised the beer and soda areas.
The decision to re-open Valley Grocery was a difficult one, they explained. Don and Jennifer used divine guidance and giving hearts to make this life-changing decision.
“I grew up here, I ran with Colleen’s boys; we lived in the community; it was my home till I moved to Montana”, Don said intently. “When we returned, it just wasn’t the same without the store”.
“We spoke at length with our Pastors” Jennifer explained. “We wanted to make sure it was the right decision for us. We wanted to do something for our community…for Hasty”.
Although we Hastyites will always miss Colleen at her store from all her years as our ‘community center’, Don and Jennifer reflect a similar giving spirit and hard-working mantra. This will sustain them through the bumps and rough spots that all businesses encounter at times. “Colleen was so supportive to us” Jennifer said. As I think about that statement…I am not surprised; that was and always will be, our Colleen.
“Our summer hours are 7 to 7, Monday through Saturday, and noon to 5 on Sundays” Jennifer said. “Sunday is family day!” Don and Jennifer proudly dote over 3 lovely children. The oldest can be seen at times, as the ‘in-training’ cashier.
Jennifer and Don serve lunch several days a week and breakfast on Saturday mornings. Their deli turkey is “choice”…just ask my turkey-loving husband! Roast beef, ham, beef bologna and a special “loaf cheese” include some of the items available so far in the ‘deli’ area. Beer, sodas, butter, milk, etc., fill their refrigerator cases along with numerous other grocery items.
“We just got in little packets of Tylenol, Advil and Aspirin”, Jennifer mentioned. If locals have some special item requests, we will certainly consider getting them in”. They carry a consignment jelly in many flavors; all natural, no artificial preservatives or high fructose corn syrup.
The RO water machine we all missed for so long, still sits in the same area of the store as before; cost = $0.25/gallon!
Don and Jennifer thought it was important to keep the same phone #, 719.829.4810. Give them a call to check on lunch times and menu items, or just to give them our famous ‘friendly HASTY community welcome’…let them know how grateful we are to have Valley Grocery open again. Check them on Facebook for their lunch menu.
Stop in for their $1 cup of coffee, or a soft-serve ice cream; yes indeed, ice cream! Sit down at their little eating area near the back of the store; get to know Jennifer and Don. Oh yeah…ask them how they met, and enjoy their candid, loving banter; it’ll warm your heart.
Almost forgot; check out the long beautifully re-finished, 100 year old wood counter for the cash register. Nice job, guys!
Hasty, Colorado welcomes Don and Jennifer Ebright…and the return of Valley Grocery to Hasty, Colorado. 719.829.4810.
