Lakeview Campground sits about a mile north of John Martin Reservoir State Park. The cost is the same as the park campground $20/night, with a small exception – Lakeview includes free showers and a hometown, family atmosphere you and your entire family will enjoy. And there is free WI-FI. Of course, water and electric are also included.
The nicely kept, quiet, undisturbed surroundings allow a view to the east that goes on forever. You may catch sight of a deer or two grazing in the field nearby as you enjoy your morning camp-coffee and breakfast. All sites have a picnic table and fire ring. Owners are on site making this a campground you and your family can ‘come home to’ … year after year.
Dave Yowell and Yvonne Athey, owners/on site, work well as a team to insure your stay is pleasant, satisfying and quiet. “I always wanted to open a campground” Dave explained. When I got hurt, it was the perfect life change I needed”. Their smiles and kind demeanor make you feel at home as soon as you walk in the door.
As I chatted with Mel, their friendly manager, a state park campground family came in to pick up their bottle of ranch salad dressing. Apparently these people had come in earlier for other items and were overheard to say that they needed ranch dressing. Dave and Yvonne sent someone into Las Animas to make sure it was available for them before dinner! Now that – is Hasty hometown hospitality!
Mel explained at length that Lakeview’s intent is to make sure their guests are comfortable and happy with their stay.
“You can actually count the stars, they are so close at night” Mel said. Dave talked about the lack of noise and the close commune with Nature available here. When I asked them what the center of a camper’s experience might be here at Lakeview, they agreed; “Atmosphere…we promote and support an enjoyable family atmosphere.”
Every time I run down to their little country store in the front of the campground (for my unending fix of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups), Dave proudly brings me to the shower area to update me on their construction progress. “We’re just about complete,” Dave stated proudly.” The shower/bathroom area has men and women’s showers and toilets, and two sinks; it’s cozy, clean, nicely decorated and makes one feel – well…’at home’. And remember – these amenities are free with your campground fee!
The store carries fishing paraphernalia including live bait. There are basic camping groceries available, some sandwiches, drinks… and yes – a Blue Bunny case with various Blue Bunny choices.
Enjoy their $.99 cup of coffee; they also serve decaf!
If you are boating, you might look over their nice selection of Life Jackets – a must-have item for playing in the reservoir. Dave and Yvonne also offer boat and RV storage; very convenient as they are about a mile from the water!
When you visit the store, don’t forget to check out the enormous Bison head on the wall; and Wiley Coyote, too.
Lakeview’s flyer states; “Our friendly staff welcomes the opportunity to greet you. We pride ourselves on letting you have your visit and yet still feel at home. You will certainly find we are laid back and welcome you and your family, friends and pets. Come enjoy our sites and amenities and leave the rest to us.”
If you have questions, shoot Dave and Yvonne an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Stop in the store and give Dave, Yvonne and Mel some of our friendly Hasty welcome. Ask them about the old Lakeview School that was on their site years ago.
